SNGPL vs SSGC — Which Covers Your Area

Quick Answer

SNGPL covers Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), and Islamabad. SSGC covers Sindh and Balochistan. The dividing line follows provincial boundaries. Check which company your bill comes from — it's printed at the top of every gas bill.

Pakistan's Two Gas Companies Explained

Pakistan's natural gas distribution is split between two companies — a geographic duopoly that covers the entire country. Unlike electricity, where 11 DISCOs serve different regions, gas is simpler: two companies, divided along provincial boundaries.

SNGPL — Northern Gas Distribution

SNGPL (Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited) is the larger of the two companies by consumer count, serving Pakistan's most populated provinces. Its network stretches from Peshawar in the northwest to Multan in the south, covering every major Punjab city and most KPK urban centers. SNGPL manages the gas transmission pipeline from Sui (Balochistan, where Pakistan's gas fields are located) northward to Punjab and KPK.

SNGPL's consumer base is predominantly domestic (residential), with a significant industrial component in Punjab's manufacturing corridor (Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujranwala). Winter demand in SNGPL's territory is very high due to cold winters in Punjab and KPK — this creates seasonal supply pressure that sometimes results in low pressure or curtailment.

SSGC — Southern Gas Distribution

SSGC (Sui Southern Gas Company) serves Sindh and Balochistan. Karachi — Pakistan's largest city — constitutes the bulk of SSGC's consumer base. The company also manages distribution in Sindh's smaller cities (Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana) and Balochistan (primarily Quetta).

SSGC faces unique challenges: Karachi's rapidly expanding population strains existing infrastructure, leading to chronic low pressure in many neighborhoods. Balochistan's sparse population means gas infrastructure outside Quetta is extremely limited. Despite being closer to Pakistan's gas fields in Sui, SSGC consumers don't necessarily get better supply — gas allocation is federally managed.

Which Company Serves Your Area?

The simplest way to check: look at the top of your gas bill. It clearly states either "Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited" or "Sui Southern Gas Company Limited." If you don't have a gas connection yet:

  • Punjab (any city): SNGPL
  • Islamabad and Rawalpindi: SNGPL
  • KPK (any city): SNGPL
  • AJK (Azad Kashmir): SNGPL
  • Sindh (any city including Karachi): SSGC
  • Balochistan (including Quetta): SSGC

Can You Choose Between SNGPL and SSGC?

No. Gas distribution is a regulated monopoly — each company has exclusive rights to its designated territory. You can't switch providers. Your gas company is determined by your property's location, not by your preference. This is different from telecom where you can choose between Jazz, Telenor, Ufone, and Zong.

SNGPL vs SSGC — Coverage Questions

Check your gas bill — the company name is printed at the top. If you don't have a bill, it's based on your location: Punjab, KPK, and Islamabad are SNGPL; Sindh and Balochistan are SSGC.

No. Each company has exclusive distribution rights in its territory. Your provider is determined by your property location — there's no option to choose or switch.

Rates are set by OGRA and are largely similar, but there can be minor differences in surcharges and additional fees between the two companies. Base tariff slabs are nationally uniform.

Neither is inherently better — service quality depends on your specific area. SNGPL generally has fewer low-pressure complaints in Punjab cities compared to SSGC in Karachi, but both companies face infrastructure challenges in different regions.
