How to Download E-License from DLIMS
Punjab issues licenses in categories: MC (Motorcycle), LTV (Light Transport Vehicle — cars up to 3,500 kg), HTV (Heavy Transport Vehicle — trucks, buses), and PSV (Public Service Vehicle). Each category requires a separate test and has different age and medical requirements.
All Punjab Driving License Categories Explained
| Category | Vehicles Covered | Minimum Age | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| MC (Motorcycle) | Motorcycles, scooters | 18 (16 in some districts) | Written + practical test |
| LTV (Car) | Cars, jeeps, vans ≤3,500 kg | 18 | Learner permit + driving test |
| HTV (Heavy) | Trucks, buses, trailers | 21 | LTV held for 2+ years + HTV test |
| PSV (Public) | Public transport vehicles | 21 | HTV + PSV endorsement + medical |
You can hold multiple categories on a single license card. Most people start with MC or LTV and add categories later as needed. Each new category requires its own driving test — holding an LTV doesn't automatically qualify you for HTV.
Adding Categories to Your Existing License
To add a new category (e.g., adding HTV to an existing LTV license):
- Book an appointment at your DLIMS office for category addition.
- Bring your current license, CNIC, and the fee for the new category.
- Pass the learner permit written test for the new category (if applicable).
- Complete the practical driving test in the relevant vehicle type.
- Updated license with the new category is issued within 7-15 days.
Starting from scratch? Learner permit for first-timers. For the driving test: practical test guide. For motorcycle specifically: motorcycle license process.
What Each Category Allows
- MC only: Motorcycles and scooters only. Cannot drive any four-wheeled vehicle.
- LTV: All vehicles up to 3,500 kg gross weight — passenger cars, SUVs, pickups, small vans. Also includes MC (you can ride motorcycles with an LTV license).
- HTV: All LTV vehicles PLUS trucks, buses, trailers, and large commercial vehicles. Requires 2+ years of LTV experience before applying.
- PSV: Public service vehicles — buses, taxis, ride-hailing vehicles. Requires HTV plus specific medical clearance and sometimes a background check.
Driving a vehicle outside your license category is illegal. Driving a truck with only an LTV license, or a car with only an MC license, results in a challan and your insurance may be void in case of an accident. Get the correct category before driving.
