How to Apply for International Driving License
Apply at a DLIMS office with your CNIC, pass the written test (traffic rules and signs), then pass the motorcycle practical test (balance, figure-8, controlled stop). Fee: approximately Rs. 600-1,000. Minimum age: 18 (some districts allow 16). Motorcycle license (MC category) is valid for 5 years.
Motorcycle License Requirements in Punjab
Pakistan has an estimated 20+ million motorcycles — and the vast majority of riders have no license. This isn't because the process is difficult; it's because enforcement is lax outside major cities. However, riding without a license means: no insurance coverage in accidents, automatic challan if stopped, and legal liability issues if you cause an injury.
Motorcycle Practical Test
The MC practical test is simpler than the car test but still requires basic competence:
- Balance test: Ride in a straight line at slow speed without wobbling or putting feet down.
- Figure-8: Navigate a figure-8 pattern between cones without touching them or putting feet down.
- Controlled stop: Ride at moderate speed and stop within a marked zone when signaled.
- U-turn: Execute a U-turn within a defined space.
The entire test takes 5-10 minutes. If you can ride a motorcycle confidently in traffic, the test is straightforward. Failures usually happen from test anxiety, not lack of skill.
Want a car license too? You can apply for LTV at the same time: learner permit process. For all license categories: category guide. Check your existing license: DLIMS verification.
Why Getting a Motorcycle License Matters
- Insurance: Riding without a valid license voids most insurance policies. In an accident, you bear 100% of the cost.
- Legal protection: If involved in a traffic incident, having a license demonstrates you were legally authorized to ride. Without one, you're automatically at fault in many legal frameworks.
- ID document: A driving license serves as a secondary ID — accepted at banks, shops, and for verification purposes alongside your CNIC.
- E-challan accumulation: Safe city cameras increasingly capture motorcycle violations. Challans against unlicensed riders accumulate and complicate future license applications.
The process is simple and cheap. Rs. 600-1,000 and 2-3 office visits gets you a 5-year motorcycle license. Compare that to the cost of a single challan (Rs. 500-1,000), loss of vehicle in impoundment, or uninsured accident liability. Getting licensed is the rational choice.
